Reconstruction
When a mastectomy is necessary to properly treat disease, the result is an enormous change to your body, sense of self, confidence.

Whether to embrace being flat, or choosing a reconstruction, is an entirely personal decision, which only you can make - your feelings about your mastectomy will be very different to someone else's.
Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is available providing you are generally fit enough for a more lenghty, complex operation, and do not smoke, or have quit smoking at least 3 months ago.

Reconstruction allows the formation of a 'breast shape', with the aim of restoring the profile of your natural breast, making is easier to wear certain clothes and hopefully increase your confidence, should you be struggling without a breast shape. What reconstruction does not create is a new breast - the reconstruction will feel and move differently to your natural tissues.

If you have your natural breast on the other side, Amy may recommend surgery to this side, in order to give the best possible symmetry in and out of clothes. Depending on your natural breast size and shape, this surgery may be a reduction or uplift, or an increase in size using an implant.

Amy will discuss options for reconstruction: this may involve using an implant alone, or may require bringing in some new tissue from your back or tummy. Some operations may require referral to a plastic surgeon.
